Debaters Evan Grisham, Kendall Morales, Nadia Garcia, Lilah Molina and Jordy Maltos pose with their round wins and hardware after a speech meet in Leon. The speech team will compete at two more meets in December.

A Saturday spent debating at Leon High School resulted in a trip home with trophies and awards.

Five debaters competed – two CX teams and one LDer – and even though most of the other schools there had more competitors, the group came away third overall in the meet.

“I thought the kids did a fantastic job,” speech coach Melanie Menefee said. “Three of the kids were novice debaters, but everyone won at least one round. Everyone learned something, and that is the mark of a great meet.”

The wins made the day worthwhile for the students, especially the new debaters.

“It was an amazing experience,” freshman Jordy Maltos said. “I really enjoyed winning my first round; I learned so much going, and I am definitely more ready for district .”

CX team Evan Grisham and Kendal Morales took first place, while Maltos won sixth in LD. Grisham was also awarded high point speaker in CX.

“It was so much fun,” junior Kendal Morales said. “It was a great way to get it started and get some practice to prepare us for district later on.”
