The Lady Bison basketball team began district play on December 17 with Frankston and will begin the second round of district January 21. They played Groesbeck Friday night to end the first round of district with a win. The girls are undefeated so far in district. The JV team fell to Groesbeck.

Before district began the girls played a number of preseason games to prepare for district opponents. Each team being different gave the girls and coach experience with the different types of teams. The girls played Kerens, Leon, Thorndale, Troy, Life Waxahachie, and they attended three tournaments: Centerville, Cameron, and Crockett, playing Mexia, Iola, West, Aggieland, Crockett, Palestine, Hearne, and Madisonville.

“All the game we have played before district really did help to prepare us,” senior Mackenzie Houston said. “We wouldn’t have gotten some wins if we wouldn’t have already seen the types of teams and their ways of playing.”

With all the games and new experiences of teams, they have been working long hours in practice to prepare for district and continue on to play-offs. The different types of teams have prepared the girls for their games. According to the coach, they have improved every game.

“Golly, the girls have grown and improved every single game,” head coach Dustin Bates said. “Watching them play every game is so much fun and exciting.”

The JV teams this year were limited for some of the district opponents, so they haven’t played much. Bates adds last-minute pick-up games for the girls as much as he can.

“It sucks that some of the district teams don’t have a JV because I really like playing and being busy,” freshman Alexis O’Daniel said. “But I am glad Coach Bates makes an effort to get us a game.”  The Lady Bison will play Frankston at their place to start round 2 of district play.
