“Life” is not what it is cracked up to be

Life+is+not+what+it+is+cracked+up+to+be

The science fiction/thriller film Life came out in theaters last month. The movie is about six scientists who are aboard the International Space Station and have the task of of studying a soil sample from Mars. After he extracts a single cell from the soil sample, Hugh Derry revives a dormant organism that proves there is life on Mars. At first the team in fond of the organism and its rapid progress, but soon that fondness turns to hatred as the organism threatens the crew and all life on Earth.

The movie stars Ryan Reynolds as Rory Adams, Ariyon Bakare as Hugh Derry, Rebecca Ferguson as Miranda North, Hiroyuki Sanada as Sho Murakami, Jake Gyllenhaal as David Jordan, Olga Dihovichnaya as Ekaterina Golovkina, Alexandre Nguyen as fishman 1, and Hiu Woong-Sin as fisherman 2. All of these actors played their parts really well, and everything looked so realistic; some parts are a little too realistic.

The structure of this movie iss different from that of other movies that I have watched. I went into the theater thinking that this movie would be a boring alien movie; however, I was wrong. It was anything but boring. Life had me on the edge of my seat, covering my face, and thinking about walking out of the theater, but from fear, not from boredom. It started off nicely but the middle and end were full of horror – and horror buffs are the only people I would recommend this movie to.

Director Daniel Espinosa did an okay job with the lighting, setting, and special effects throughout the movie. Personally, I think that he went overboard with the special effects. It was so frightening that I had to look away from the screen a few times. Also the setting hardly changed from the spacecraft, which made it a bit static. This was not the best movies that Espinosa has directed, but it wasn’t horrible. Espinosa has also directed Babylonsjukan in 2004, Outside Love in 2007, Easy Money in 2010, Safe House in 2012, and Child 44 in 2015.

Life would be a good movie for those people that enjoy science fiction, thrills, and gory details. I thought the movie was until I watched the organism suck the life out of a rat. If you  want to be grossed out, then this movie is the one for you. Life is playing in theaters now.
