Cruella connects all the dots

If you like to watch movies with a big plot twist, then Cruella needs to make its way onto your to-watch list. The movie was released in theaters in May 2021 and was directed by Craig Gillespie, who also directed Million Dollar Arm, Fright Night and Finest Hours. Emma Stone plays the role of Estella/Cruella, and Emma Thompson plays the role of the Baroness. The story is a prequel to 101 Dalmatians, showing viewers what happened to make Cruella the evil monster she is.

Estella is on her own, a shrewd young grifter who’s determined to become a famous fashion designer. She meets a duo of thieves who are pleased with her ability to create mischief; they team up and together they build a life for themselves on the streets of London. It’s only when Estella make friends with, and then comes to loathe, fashion legend Baroness von Hellman that she fully embraces her wicked nature and becomes the revenge-bent Cruella. Estella becomes increasingly resentful of the Baroness abusing her and stealing her glory; eventually, she realizes what a vile person the Baroness is, and vows to shame and destroy her.

The camerawork is amazing, the lead performances by two Emmas are spectacular, and the parade of eye-popping costumes makes this a feast for the eyes. Don’t miss this prequel that explains how one of Disney’s wickedest women came to be so bad.
