The CX Debate teams faced new competitors this year, with Westwood creating debate teams and Fairfield joining the district. COVID caused plenty of changes, from virtual tournaments becoming the norm to UIL deciding to cut the number of qualifying teams for state in half.

“This was literally their first in-person tournament of the year,” coach Melonie Menefee said. “It was so nice to be able to see coaches and competitors from other schools. We took plenty of precautions to be safe, and the kids enjoyed the chance to debate face-to-face in front of live judges for a change.”

Junior Omar Almeida and freshman Nicollette Arabie  placed first and will advance to state competition in March, which will be held online. Juniors Jalea Brown and Anthony Gonzalez placed fourth.

“The kids all did a fantastic job,” Menefee said. “We are ready for things to  go back to normal, and until then, we will do what we need to do to keep competing.”
