BHS cheerleaders traveled to Fort Worth this last week to compete in the UIL State Cheer Competition. The cheerleaders started working at the beginning of October on their three types of cheers: Band Chant, Crowd Leading and Fight Song.

“Getting on the floor was exciting, and my adrenaline was through the roof,” sophomore Saloni Jariwala said. “I didn’t even feel that nervous about going on to the mat. I was honestly just ready to show them what we were all about.”

The cheerleaders competed three times throughout the day in prelims, starting with Crowd Leading and ending with Fight Song. As coach Cheryl Lack gave them pep talks right before entering the mat, the girls faces were filled with smiles and excitement.

“It was so much fun being the mascot,” freshman Gabbie Ferguson said. “I was not really nervous knowing nobody could see me, but I do regret not cheering a little because I love the idea of being in the spotlight.”

The girls had practice time in the morning before it was finally time to step on the mat and show the judges what they could do. Crowd Leading was up first, and the girls gave it all they had.

“Crowd Leading was my favorite cheer by far,” sophomore Ashley White said. “I was mega-hyped, and I live for being on the floor with all the spotlights.”

The second part of prelims was Band Chant, which encourages the squad to be loud and proud. This year, five girls traveled with the cheer team as flags. They added a nice touch to the performance this year.

“It was definitely a lot of hours and work put into competing,” freshman Avery Best said. “It all paid off once I finally got to go and compete. It was so much fun and I enjoyed every minute of the experience.”
