Freshmen teach English class

It was the students’ turn to teach the class. Armed with their slide projects and children’s books, the groups taught one another about the plot and literary devices.

“When I am older, I am really debating whether I should become an elementary teacher or not,” freshman Emma Adams said. “This children’s book presentation gave me a small sneak peek on what it is like teaching to a class.”

The students had many different books to choose from, including La Llorona, Joseph Had a Little Overcoat, Where the Wild Things Are and Kitten’s First Full Moon.

“My group’s presentation was over La Llorona,” freshman Eddie Aguilar said. “I grew up with my grandmother telling me that story, and I thought it would be fun if I read it to the class.”

Students had an entire day to prepare themselves. The next day they presented and taught to their class.

“When I heard we had a day to prepare ourselves, I knew that my group and I would have to focus and get ready,” freshman Hannah Travis said. “We worked together to get this presentation done.”

The students talked about the exposition, rising action, falling action, climax, falling action and resolution of the story. They looked for literacy elements that were in the story.

“It was really cool how an author put many different types of literary elements in one story,” freshman Maria Montanez said. “I enjoyed sharing the things I found.”

The stories were definitely different than the ones the students were used to reading in class.

“I really enjoyed doing this presentation with my group,” Adams said. “I would definitely enjoy doing this again.”
