Trump declares state of emergency

Tana Cleveland

After President Trump decided he was unhappy with the bipartisan compromise bill the House and Senate passed concerning border security last week, he declared a national emergency in an effort to garner funding for the wall. Apparently unwilling for force the government into another shutdown position but also unwilling to compromise, the president then flew to his Florida home for a weekend off.

President Trump’s plan to divert military construction money to fund the wall on the border is an unusual place to use emergency powers. Many people in both parties say that this presidential decision could be dangerous to future presidents and their power. It could encourage new presidents to spend money in a crisis however they want. Additionally, it is already drawing legal opposition, with 16 states filing suit so far.
