New album showcases old favorites

On January 24, Weezer unexpectedly released their twelfth album. The band released the new album without any advertisement or announcements being made. The album is called Weezer after the band, but it is referred to as the “Teal Album.” The album consists of covers from multiple artists such as Toto, Tears for Fears, Black Sabbath and Michael Jackson.

Weezer starting making music in 1992 and they immediately picked up fans. They released their first album in 1993 and since have made eleven other successful albums. The idea to make an album of covers came up after fans requested multiple songs to be covered. Weezer decided to take the requests and make an unannounced cover album featuring titles “Africa,” “Sweet Dreams,” and “Mr. Blue Sky.”

It’s gonna take a lot to take me away from you. There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do. I bless the rains down in Africa. Gonna take some time to do the things we never had.” ~ “Africa”-Toto

Since this album is full of covers, there are some that just can’t replace the original recording. “Paranoid” was one of those that you could never beat. The original riffs are really unique and cannot be recreated no matter the artist.

I need someone to show me the things in life that I can’t find. I can’t see the things in life that make true happiness. I must be blind.” ~ “Paranoid”- Black Sabbath

Songs that I would strongly recommend include “Africa,” “Happy Together,” “Billie Jean,” and “Stand By Me.” I usually cannot narrow down a favorite song on an album, but this time I could. The cover of “Mr. Blue Sky” was amazing. The different layered harmonies added a whole other element to the song and the different riffs balanced each other. The song was smooth and had a nice ending transition.

“Mister Blue Sky, please tell us why you had to hide away for so long, so long. Where did we go wrong?”~ “Mr. Blue Sky”- Electric Light Orchestra

I would recommend this album to anyone who is looking for good covers of older songs. This album has a very diverse selection of songs to choose from.
