Two women, accompanied by a couple of undercover police officers, secretly entered the Sabrimala Temple in India, creating a giant protest for equality. Over 3 million supporters stood in a “human chain” to help barricade the temple from others trying to stop the women from entering the temple. The human chain was nearly 300 miles long and was made up of women of all ages and backgrounds.
Multiple women have tried to enter the temple since October, the beginning of India’s #metoo movement. However, none of them were successful despite the fact that India’s Supreme Court ruled this specific ban on women as unconstitutional. After word of the women entering the temple made its rounds, the priest shut it down to do a purification ritual. This is something that usually only happens when someone bleeds on it or children desecrate it.
